JICS – The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV). These contract positions are offered for a period of 36 months and are aimed at strengthening independent oversight within correctional facilities. Successful candidates will play an important role in promoting transparency, accountability, and the protection of inmates’ rights within designated correctional centres across various management regions.
The opportunity offers a salary of R85 620 per annum (3/8th, Level 05), plus 37% in lieu of benefits. A total of 12 positions are available, and applications must be submitted before the closing date of 06 March 2026. Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of a Grade 12 / Senior Certificate. Candidates must be computer literate and demonstrate accuracy in their work.
A recommendation or nomination as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) by a community organisation (not older than six (6) months) must be attached to the application.
Applicants must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. They must be public spirited and have sound knowledge of the Batho Pele principles. Assertiveness and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
Preference will be given to qualifying applicants who reside in communities located in the vicinity of the correctional centre where the post needs to be filled.
Duties
Successful candidates will be responsible for visiting the correctional facility daily and engaging with inmates and Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officials regarding complaints and other matters.
They will monitor the conditions of incarceration and report on findings. This includes monitoring and reporting on all instances of deaths, segregation, use of mechanical restraints, and use of force within the centre.
They will support officials from the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services during inspections and investigations.
Administrative responsibilities include handling inmate complaints, capturing mandatory matters, and producing detailed reports.

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit only a completed and signed new Z83 application form together with a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV), combined into one PDF document and saved using surname and initials. Each advertised post must be applied for separately, quoting the correct reference number, and all required sections of the Z83 form must be fully completed, initialled, and signed to avoid disqualification.
All applications must be received on or before the closing date and time, as late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Only shortlisted candidates will be requested to provide certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents before the interview. Applications submitted in any format other than the prescribed method, or that do not comply with the stated requirements, will be treated as invalid.

Shortlisted candidates will undergo a pre-entry practical exercise and personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification.
